Using T.R.I.C.K.y Word Method to spell the Non-phonetic word (or a word at a higher phonetic concept)
Students are taught to Talk about what is unusual about the word's spelling, trace the word with Rainbow tracing, Imitate the word by copying it. Cover the word and write it from memory, and then Keep on guard by checking the spelling.
The word "have" is a regular, phonetic word when students understand that no English word ends in the letter v. We tell students that the v would fall over without the support of the silent e.
*For the word sort on the homework, some of the short vowel sounds will be found in the base word, some in the second syllable, and some words may have altered sounds altogether because of their spelling pattern. The key to this activity is to recognize the sounds the vowels make and realize that some words/sounds are odd balls and just don't fit in with the rule.
